TT – Với nhà báo Han Hak Soo, 36 tuổi – một tên tuổi đầu năm 2005 còn xa lạ với nhi?u ngư?i Hàn Quốc – thì năm 2005 vừa qua là một năm đầy sóng gió không thua gì đối với nhà khoa h?c bị phế truất Hwang Woo Suk.

Chỉ có khác là hai ngư?i ở hai chiến tuyến đối nghịch nhau. Gi? đây ở Hàn Quốc ai cũng biết anh là tác giả loạt tài liệu vạch trần sự thật v? “công trình” của giáo sư Hwang và đã phải chấp nhận nhi?u thử thách, kể cả sự đe d?a tính mạng mình và ngư?i thân.

Cuộc chiến giữa nhà khoa h?c và nhà báo

M?i việc bắt đầu vào ngày 19-5, khi nhóm 60 nhà khoa h?c Hàn Quốc do giáo sư (GS) Hwang Woo Suk dẫn đầu tuyên bố h?

1.000 sinh viên, h?c sinh hóa trang ngộ nghĩnh, rộn ràng theo tiếng nhạc cùng gần 2.000 hoạt náo viên đã thực sự lôi cuốn m?i ngư?i “nhập cuộc”.

Von Neumann was a child prodigy, born into a banking family is Budapest, Hungary. When only six years old he could divide eight-digit numbers in his head. He received his early education in Budapest, under the tutelage of M. Fekete, with whom he published his first paper at the age of 18. Entering the University of Budapest in 1921, he studied Chemistry, moving his base of studies to both Berlin and Zurich before receiving his diploma in 1925 in Chemical Engineering. He returned to his first love of mathematics in completing his doctoral degree in 1928. he quickly gained a reputation in set theory, algebra, and quantum mechanics. At a time of political unrest in central Europe, he was invited to visit Princeton University in 1930, and when the Institute for Advanced Studies was founded there in 1933, he was appointed to be one of the original six Professors of Mathematics, a position which he retained for the remainder of his life. At the instigation and sponsorship of Oskar Morganstern, von Neumann and Kurt Gödel became US citizens in time for their clearance for wartime work. There is an anecdote which tells of Morganstern driving them to their immigration interview, after having learned about the US Constitution and the history of the country. On the drive there Morganstern asked them if they had any questions which he could answer. Gödel replied that he had no questions but he had found some logical inconsistencies in the Constitution that he wanted to ask the Immigration officers about. Morganstern strongly recommended that he not ask questions, just answer them!

During 1936 through 1938 Alan Turing was a graduate student in the Department of Mathematics at Princeton and did his dissertation under Alonzo Church. Von Neumann invited Turing to stay on at the Institute as his assistant but he preferred to return to Cambridge; a year later Turing was involved in war work at Bletchley Park. This visit occurred shortly after Turing’s publication of his 1934 paper “On Computable Numbers with an Application to the Entscheidungs-problem” which involved the concepts of logical design and the universal machine. It must be concluded that von Neumann knew of Turing’s ideas, though whether he applied them to the design of the IAS Machine ten years later is questionable. [5]

Von Neumann’s interest in computers differed from that of his peers by his quickly perceiving the application of computers to applied mathematics for specific problems, rather than their mere application to the development of tables. During the war, von Neumann’s expertise in hydrodynamics, ballistics, meteorology, game theory, and statistics, was put to good use in several projects. This work led him to consider the use of mechanical devices for computation, and although the stories about von Neumann imply that his first computer encounter was with the ENIAC, in fact it was with Howard Aiken’s Harvard Mark I (ASCC) calculator. His correspondence in 1944 shows his interest with the work of not only Aiken but also the electromechanical relay computers of George Stibitz, and the work by Jan Schilt at the Watson Scientific Computing Laboratory at Columbia University. By the latter years of World War II von Neumann was playing the part of an executive management consultant, serving on several national committees, applying his amazing ability to rapidly see through problems to their solutions. Through this means he was also a conduit between groups of scientists who were otherwise shielded from each other by the requirements of secrecy. He brought together the needs of the Los Alamos National Laboratory (and the Manhattan Project) with the capabilities of firstly the engineers at the Moore School of Electrical Engineering who were building the ENIAC, and later his own work on building the IAS machine. Several “supercomputers” were built by National Laboratories as copies of his machine.

Postwar von Neumann concentrated on the development of the Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS) computer and its copies around the world. His work with the Los Alamos group continued and he continued to develop the synergism between computers capabilities and the needs for computational solutions to nuclear problems related to the hydrogen bomb.

Any computer scientist who reviews the formal obituaries of John von Neumann of the period shortly after his death will be struck by the lack of recognition of his involvement in the field of computers and computing. His Academy of Sciences biography, written by Salomon Bochner [1958], for example, includes but a single, short paragraph in ten pages – “… in 1944 von Neumann’s attention turned to computing machines and, somewhat surprisingly, he decided to build his own. As the years progressed, he appeared to thrive on the multitudinousness of his tasks. It has been stated that von Neumann’s electronic computer hastened the hydrogen bomb explosion on November 1, 1952.” Dieudonné [1981] is a little more generous with words but appears to confuse the concept of the stored program concept with the wiring of computers: “Dissatisfied with the computing machines available immediately after the war, he was led to examine from its foundations the optimal method that such machines should follow, and he introduced new procedures in the logical organization, the “codes” by which a fixed system of wiring could solve a great variety of problems.”!

From the point of view of von Neumann’s contributions to the field of computing, including the application of his concepts of mathematics to computing, and the application of computing to his other interests such as mathematical physics and economics, perhaps the most comprehensive is by Herman Goldstine [1972]. There has been some criticism of Goldstine’s perspective since he personally was intimately involved in von Neumann’s computing activities from the time of their chance meeting on the railroad platform at Aberdeen in 1944 [2] through their joint activities at the Institute for Advanced Studies in developing the IAS machine.

There is no doubt that his insights into the organization of machines led to the infrastructure which is now known as the “von Neumann Architecture”. However, von Neumann’s ideas were not along those lines originally; he recognized the need for parallelism in computers but equally well recognized the problems of construction and hence settled for a sequential system of implementation. Through the report entitled First Draft of a Report on the EDVAC [1945], authored solely by von Neumann, the basic elements of the stored program concept were introduced to the industry. A retrospective examination of the development [3] of this idea reveals that the concept was discussed by J. Presper Eckert, John Mauchly, Arthur Burks, and others in connection with their plans for a successor machine to the ENIAC. The “Draft Report” was just that, a draft, and although written by von Neumann was intended to be the joint publication of the whole group. The EDVAC was intended to be the first stored program computer, but the summer school at the Moore School in 1946 there was so much emphasis in the EDVAC that Maurice Wilkes, Cambridge University Mathematical Laboratory, conceived his own design for the EDSAC, which became the world’s first operational, production, stored-program computer.

In the 1950′s von Neumann was employed as a consultant to IBM to review proposed and ongoing advanced technology projects. One day a week, von Neumann “held court” at 590 Madison Avenue, New York. On one of these occasions in 1954 he was confronted with the FORTRAN concept; John Backus remembered von Neumann being unimpressed and that he asked “why would you want more than machine language?” Frank Beckman, who was also present, recalled that von Neumann dismissed the whole development as “but an application of the idea of Turing’s `short code’.” Donald Gillies, one of von Neumann’s students at Princeton, and later a faculty member at the University of Illinois, recalled in the mid-1970′s that the graduates students were being “used” to hand assemble programs into binary for their early machine (probably the IAS machine). He took time out to build an assembler, but when von Neumann found out about he was very angry, saying (paraphrased), “It is a waste of a valuable scientific computing instrument to use it to do clerical work.”

One last anecdote about von Neumann’s brilliant mathematical capabilities. The von Neumann household in Princeton was open to many social activities and on one such occasion someone posed the “fly and the train” problem [4] to von Neumann. Quickly von Neumann came up with the answer. Suspecting that he had seen through the problem to discover a simple solution, he was asked how he solved the problem. “Simple”, he responded, “I summed the series!” [From Nick Metropolis]

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) continues to honor John von Neumann through the presentation of an annual award in his name. The IEEE John von Neumann Medal was established by the Board of Directors in 1990 and may be presented annually “for outstanding achievements in computer-related science and technology.” The achievements may be theoretical, technological, or entrepreneurial, and need not have been made immediately prior to the date of the award.

Quotations

If people do not believe that mathematics is simple, it is only because they do not realize how complicated life is.

Anyone who considers arithmetical methods of producing random numbers is, of course, in a state of sin. (Quoted in Knuth, 1968, Vol. 2, also in Goldstine, 1972, p. 297.)

Alan Mathison Turing was one of the great pioneers of the computerfield. He inspired the now common terms of “The Turing Machine”and “Turing’s Test.” As a mathematician he appliedthe concept of the algorithm to digital computers. His researchinto the relationships between machines and nature created thefield of artificial intelligence. His intelligence and foresightmade him one of the first to step into the information age.

Alan Turing was born in London on June 23, 1912. As soon ashe began attending school, his aptitude for the sciences beganto emerge. When it came to the more ‘right brain’ topics of Englishand history however, his attention waned. His instructors attemptedto get Alan to study other disciplines, but he would respond tomathematics and science. He retained this trait throughout hiseducation.

He began his career in mathematics at King’s College, CambridgeUniversity in 1931. It was here that his tendencies to recreateprevious discoveries began to emerge. Turing seemed to have littleinterest in using the work of previous scientists; he would typicallyspend time recreating their work instead. Upon graduation, Turingwas made a fellow of King’s College, and then moved on to PrincetonUniversity. It was during this time that he explored what waslater called the “Turing Machine.”

Turing helped pioneer the concept of the digital computer. TheTuring Machine that he envisioned is essentially the same as today’smulti-purpose computers. He described a machine that would reada series of ones and zeros from a tape. These ones and zerosdescribed the steps that needed to be done to solve a particularproblem or perform a certain task. The Turing Machine would readeach of the steps and perform them in sequence, resulting in theproper answer.

This concept was revolutionary for the time. Most computersin the 1950′s were designed for a particular purpose or a limitedrange of purposes. What Turing envisioned was a machine thatcould do anything, something that we take for granted today. The method of instructing the computer was very important in Turing’sconcept. He essentially described a machine which knew a fewsimple instructions. Making the computer perform a particulartask was simply a matter of breaking the job down into a seriesof these simple instructions. This is identical to the processprogrammers go through today. He believed that an algorithm couldbe developed for most any problem. The hard part was determiningwhat the simple steps were and how to break down the larger problems.

During World War II, Turing used his knowledge and ideas in theDepartment of Communications in Great Britain. There he usedhis mathematical skills to decipher the codes the Germans wereusing to communicate. This was an especially difficult task becausethe Germans had developed a type of computer called the Enigma. It was able to generate a constantly changing code that was impossiblefor the code breakers to decipher in a timely fashion.

The Enigma
During his time with the Department of Communications in GreatBritain, Turing and his fellow scientists worked with a devicecalled COLOSSUS. The COLOSSUS quickly and efficiently decipheredthe German codes created by the Enigma. COLOSSUS was essentiallya bunch of servomotors and metal, but it was one of the firststeps toward the digital computer.

After World War II, Turing found he needed a way to relieve thestress he had been experiencing and took up long distance running. Much like everything else he enjoyed, he discovered he was quitegood at it. He obtained record times in both the 3 and 10 mileraces in the Walton Athletic Club. Typical of his logical nature, his sometimes used his athletic ability to run between locationsfor his lectures.

Turing went on to work for the National Physical Laboratory (NPL)and continued his research into digital computers. Here he workedon developing the Automatic Computing Engine (ACE), one of thefirst attempts at creating a true digital computer. It was duringthis time that he began to explore the relationship between computersand nature. He wrote a paper called “Intelligent Machinery”which was later published in 1969. This was one of the firsttimes the concept of artificial intelligence was raised.

Turing believed that machines could be created that would mimicthe processes of the human brain. He discussed the possibilityof such machines, acknowledging the difficulty people would haveaccepting a machine that would rival their own intelligence, aproblem that still plagues artificial intelligence today. Inhis mind, there was nothing the brain could do that a well designedcomputer could not. As part of his argument, Turing describeddevices already in existence that worked like parts of the humanbody, such as television cameras and microphones.

Turing often got into heated debates with other scientists regardinghis radical views of the future of computing. From our pointof view, the ideas he had are logical and are anything but surprising. From the point of view of his peers at the time, his ideas wereoutlandish. An interesting rebuttal Turing would use during sucha debate was to ask his colleague if they could create an examinationthat a computer could not be trained to answer. A computer wouldhave no problem with a multiple choice exam, however an essaytest would seem to be out of the range of a computer, howeverthis just further indicates Turing’s accurate predictions. Thereis software available today that allows computers to write essaysgiven only a few guidelines and keywords.

Turing believed that an intelligent machine could be createdby following the blueprints of the human brain. He wrote a paperin 1950 describing what is now known as the “Turing Test.” The test consisted of a person asking questions via keyboardto both a person and an intelligent machine. He believed thatif the person could not tell the machine apart from the personafter a reasonable amount of time, the machine was somewhat intelligent. This test has become the ‘holy grail’ of the artificial intelligencecommunity. Turing’s paper describing the test has been used incountless journals and papers relating to machine intelligence. The 1987 edition of the Oxford Companion to the Mind describesthe Turing test as “the best test we have for confirmingthe presence of intelligence in a machine.” (Crockett p.1)

Even more recently, The Computer Museum of Boston hosted theLoebner Prize Competition in November 1991. The software developerswere tasked with developing a program that could pass a scaleddown version of the Turing test. Modified in that the machineswere only required to converse on a limited topic. The only problemwith the value of this test lies in the semantics of artificialintelligence. One has to distinguish between software that isprogrammed to appear intelligent versus one that actually hasintelligence. Determining where one begins and ends is a problembest left to philosophers.

Turing left the National Physical Laboratory before the completionof the Automatic Computing Engine and moved on to the Universityof Manchester. There he worked on the development of the ManchesterAutomatic Digital Machine (MADAM). He truly believed that machineswould be created by the year 2000 that could replicate the humanmind. Turing worked toward this end by creating algorithms andprograms for the MADAM. He worked to create the operating manualfor the MADAM and became one of the main users of MADAM to furtherhis research.

One major aspect of Turing’s life that often goes unnoticed ishis work in biology. Turing only published one paper, entitledThe Chemical Basis of Morphogenesis in 1952. He had writtena number of other papers, but none were finished before his death. These have since been published in draft form. Turing’s mainfocus in biology was the physical structure of living things. He was interested in how and why organisms developed particularshapes. There are millions of cells in a person or a tree, andyet all know what shape to be. Turing wanted to figure out why.

An important foundation of his research was the ‘argument fromdesign.’ (Saunders) The basic idea behind this first came aroundwhen people still believed that there was an all powerful beingthat had sculpted every living thing. How else could all theseorganisms have gotten their various physical traits that allowthem to exist in their particular environment? The theory ofgod’s intervention was replaced by Darwin’s idea of natural selectionbefore Turing became involved, but the concept still works. Thestructure is being determined by outside intervention.

Turing did not subscribe to this theory. He was influenced greatlyby the biologist D’Arcy Thompson who believed that biologicalform was simply a result of chemical and physical processes. The selection of the structure does not come into play until thepossible forms have been determined. The basic bottom line forTuring’s position was, “Instead of asking why a certain arrangementof leaves is especially advantageous to a plant, he tried to showthat it was a natural consequence of the process by which theleaves are produced.”

He was using a very precise mathematical approach to the problem. This gives some insight into his strong belief in the close relationbetween nature and math. Turing’s ultimate goal was to mergealready established biological theory with mathematics and computersto create his intelligent, multi-purpose machine. He saw thedevelopment of these leaves as nothing more than a simple setof steps, an algorithm. This matched the basic concept of his’Turing Machine.’

Turing died on June 7, 1954 from what the medical examiners describedas, “self-administered potassium cyanide while in a momentof mental imbalance.” Other reasons for his death have surfaced. His mother claimed that he used to experiment with householdchemicals, trying to create new substances and became careless. Others claim he was homosexual and killed himself to preventembarrassment.

Whatever the reason for his death, Turing was truly one of thegreat forerunners in the field of computers. Today’s computerscientists still refer to his papers. The concept of the algorithmlies at the heart of every computer program for any type of digitalcomputer. It is very conceivable that his idea of thinking machinesby the year 2000 is not too far from the truth.
